Kurt Vollstedt, owner of New Dimension Hardwood Floors in Eugene, Ore., says his region is slow to adapt to new trends, but he noticed 5- to 10-inch-wide plank flooring becoming a fad for homeowners about two years ago. "They come in search of it," he says of clients. "We have a showroom stocked with samples [of wide plank flooring]."
Vollstedt speculates magazines and sites such as Houzz and Pinterest are the driving forces behind the trend. While he thinks wide planks "look great," he notes that they do require extra steps to ensure they're properly installed. "Most are a glue-assist, which slows the install and raises the price," he says.
