Are you limiting your company's social media activity to only its official page or feed? You're doing it wrong. One of the great uses of social media, and a way to grow your reputation within the industry, is to participate in the numerous wood flooring communities that have popped up on social media platforms.

On Facebook, search "wood flooring" or "floor sanding" and filter the results by groups. Open a few that look promising and click "+ Join Group." While some groups will let you in after a day or two, others are more restrictive, and it will help if you know one or more pros already in the group. Once you've hit the "Join Group" button, ask your friends to vouch for you with the group administrators. (Shameless plug: If you're looking to talk shop or buy, sell or trade used wood flooring equipment, our group is called "Wood Floor Business Community + Buy/Sell/Trade.")

On Instagram, check out #FloorTalk, a weekly discussion held Sunday nights on Stephen King's feed @sapwoodworking. King posts a couple questions as prompts to get the conversation started. Recent #FloorTalks have had dozens of comments from pros sounding off about memorable jobs, the maximum distance they would travel for a job and job site pointers.

Remember, if you do participate, bring an attitude of "I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine." You'll soon rely on the group for advice and they'll begin to lean on you, too. These groups will expand your floor knowledge and make you industry friends, and that pays dividends for life.
