Two years ago, 5 inches was considered a wide plank floor in Silicon Valley, says Jason Mack of San Mateo, Calif.-based Big Oak Hardwood Floors. These days, 8 inches has become the standard width for 80% of Mack's projects. The wider boards have been a good fit for the area's large homes, which tend to be around 6,000 square feet, Mack says. His projects typically feature ¾-inch engineered European oak floors with a natural tone and just a hint of a "cerused white look." Having recently handled a project with 11-inch-wide boards, Mack doesn't see the trend reversing. "It just keeps going wider and wider," he says. "If the cost can stay reasonable, I think that'll be the only limiting factor."
