Going Back to Do It Right

Wayne Lee Headshot

Last week was a long week.

Joey took some needed time off last week, but that made the week go just a bit slower. Together we got the first floor sanded and stained with one coat, so (as I wrote about), I had to get help from the homeowner for the last coat downstairs. Well, the steps I told you about were a pain, and they took one more day then what I felt they would; but they look great. The large landing was just a bit harder...the stain did not take the same, so I had to resand the area again. I did not have to, but I wanted to. The homeowner said it looked okay, but inside I did not like it, and any time my gut feels that way, the best thing to do is do it again and get it right. I had to take all the sanders back upstairs; thank God the motor comes of my big machine easily. The buffer and edger were no big deal, but that belt sander was a task alone.

I was able to get the landing done by Saturday afternoon with two coats. Sunday after church I went back to do the final coat on the floor and steps. Now I am pleased with the landing and steps, but forgot how much time it takes to hand-sand the steps. The trick for me is to coat the riser as I go up. Then on the way back down, I coat the steps, making sure no runs happen on the risers. The poly can run and drip on the steps, so working up then coming back down coating the step is the easiest way I've found to make sure they look good.

Just wonder how other folks coat steps?
