Nasty Subfloor Surprise

Wayne Lee Headshot

This job is a huge task for one, Joey is in Colorado seeing family ... I hope it is cold. No, I am joking; he needs the time off. It just seems like one thing done brings more pain-look at the back of the truck.

This is a small bathroom that was going to be an easy tear-out and repair, so much for that idea. I had to call the insurance company to ask for extra funds because the subfloor was just soaked with water. The press board falls apart in your hands, there is mold in every inch of the subfloor and now the drywall around the toilet must be replaced because of the mold-the water wicked up like a straw. Just look at the water in the old subfloor and you will see what I mean. It is kind of blurry but you get the idea.

It was a tough one to cut out because the tub drain and walls had to stay in. The drain is rusted and not worth using again, so now a plumber is going to replace that and set the toilet. All the tile is installed...so grout, then on to the wood flooring and making up time. I love working and working hard, but this tile job has been tough; mostly because the subfloor went south fast. Also, the layout of room makes it so cut up that it just took a ton of time and a ton of going back and forth to the wet saw. I am looking forward to the wood flooring and sanding the bedroom.

One week to do this job has killed my timeline. I also have Nathan coming to teach me how to use his products on factory-finished floors. We will be using the Clarke American Sanders FA 8 with his Pre-Fin water base. I think that Bill Price Sr. was a big part of this finish. He is a wise man and knows what he is doing, so it only makes sense that we take a look at this finish.

This is more words than I should have used today; I have to do two estimates now.  One is a 6,000-foot sand-and-finish and the other is a house that made me hold my breath just walking in the door. The pets have urinated everywhere and the carpet is nasty. I told them that my price will be very high on the tear-out ... and it worked! They are going to remove the carpet and, oh yeah, the press board. I will install a new plywood subfloor. Thank God they got the message; it smells bad!

Well, let's thank God for work.
