Pressboard Should Be Banned From the World

Wayne Lee Headshot

Well, today was a four-estimate day along with something I dislike...taking up carpet and pressboard.

The estimates went okay, but folks always say, "You come highly recommended, but can you lower your price?" Not sure what to say other than, No I cannot. I do my best to share with them what we do and why we do it...they have a great feeling when I am done telling them the reasons; all I can do is hope for the best.  The truth is my price is not high for this market. The trouble is folks still live in the 1970s when it comes to price-it's the same old song. I cannot lower the price and keep the company on the up-and-up with insurance, workers comp, and the best trained team I can bring to the job. My guys have been to the NWFA programs and we keep the standards high. I just keep the words of Sprigg in mind and do our best work so we will win in the long run.

Back to the pressboard and carpet ... I do like green eggs and ham, and I hate to pull up pressboard, Sam! That stuff should be banned from the world! They used 16d nails to hold down 1/4 press board. Here is what will make you sick: They went over 3-inch yellow pine with the junk and nailed the pressboard every 8 inches in a grid of 8x8 squares with 16d nails… Oh, that was a pain all day long. I even was thinking of saying a few bad words, but did not want my mouth washed out with soap. We'll have more of the same for the rest of the week: demo the subfloor and install new plywood so we can start the wood install, then get it sanded and finished. That I am looking forward too; I do enjoy sanding floors.
