Trying to Match Old Poly

Wayne Lee Headshot

How hard can it be to match old poly to new poly? Well, it is!

We have been doing water-damage repairs all week, it seems like we are becoming the go-to man for that in the last few weeks. Work is work, so let's move forward. The poly is 4-5 years old and it has done what they all do-yellow. I am trying to get it to look as good as I can so the new wood will have that yellow tone to it. I made a call to RustOleum and ask if their Universal Sealer will take a tint. It will up to 2 oz., and that will be my first step. I want that sealer because it will dry very fast and I can get the poly on in about one hour so I can see what it will look like. I am going today to put on the first coats... Wish me luck.

Joey called from the 2,000-foot job-it seems that the 1¼-x-5-inch pine was installed with a pin nail gun. The builder used his trim gun to hold down the wood and as they sand, it is moving all over the place. I had Joey get the homeowner and show them that to make sure they KNOW we will not stand behind any floor problems, just the finish. The builder was let go from the job about three weeks ago because they were not the right folks for the job. It is a log home, and log homes must have room to move-some move up to an inch at times and then back in the wintertime. Well, they did not know that, and the walls are now starting to grow and open up, and the trim is so messed up it is not funny. Can you give me a "We told you so" ... The install is not good, but we are just the sand-and-finish folks on this one.

For the last few weeks been hearing a bunch of trucks and work going on in the area. We live in the woods, so you do not always see what is going on. It turns out they are building a house about a 1/2 mile away, and the homeowner called to see if I can give them an estimate. Folks, it is true: some times you cannot see the house for the trees, LOL. No, this house is deep in the woods, so you cannot see it. I would love to get the work; talk about close to home. I will meet them this weekend and see what they are after. We did get a little heads-up that this is hickory… stained. Who comes up with this stuff? Hickory is a great-looking floor and they want to try to stain all the sapwood. Oh well, just "Git-R-Done," thank you, Larry the Cable Guy.

On the 18th I have a rep coming to work with me on a prefinish floor for recoat. I like the Clarke American FA-8 and they want to see me do it. I will also use the finish they have, it's water-base with "Pre-Fin" stuff you add to it. The cleaning is the key to them and I am not sure how I like the way it will prep the old finish. I will let you know when that comes about.
