... You Get to Pick the 80 Hours You Work

Wayne Lee Headshot

We got the final coat on the job in Paris, and it went well. Then off we went to look at a floor we did almost a year ago, big buckle right in the middle where we started the flooring. My guy who is no longer with me did not glue and nail the slip tounge and it allowed the board to stand up. I was not happy because it was a mistake, but because it was very hard to repair the floor. Over five hours of cutting, fitting and messing with the floor. I did not like letting him go but it had to be done; in the world of being the boss it does hurt at times.

The joke is that being the boss and owner is great because you get to pick the 80 hours a week you want to work. Yesterday was 12 hours and today was 10 ... the legs and back hurt just a bit.

Started a new job in Huntington TN, today, a small 700-foot job that should be simple; no wait did I say simple? Well, we got the call at 7:30 AM that the dry wall guys made a few mistakes and have to resand and mud a wall. I cannot move the dates back on this job so we are going to have to work together and make it happen. Have two days to get it done-and we will not fail.

Getting the time line right is a tough part of remodel jobs; everyone works off the next guy and the next guy needs more time, blah, blah, blah. Just show up when you say you will and it can get done on time. We have had other trades say, "We will be here on Monday" but not show up until Friday ... now that is just dumb. Work is hard and money is a tight as the bark on a tree, so why do that? We take great pride in doing what we say when we say it. Thanks to my crew for being on time and showing up when I ask.
