Herringbone parquet is often seen as a classic, traditional design, yet this herringbone is anything but. These compilations of classical and contemporary come to us by way of designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, collectively known as Raw-Edges Design Studio. At top is a photo of the design duo's "Wall to Wall" floor, an art installation made with stained oak that was commissioned by swanky London retailer Established & Sons. Then the duo parlayed their multi-colored herringbone concept into a gig designing commercial flooring for haute retailer Stella McCartney; included in the slideshow are photos of McCartney's flagship store in Milan. Further proof that old and new can exist in perfect harmony, McCartney picked an 18th century building in the heart of the city to house her garments and the intrepid flooring, gracefully blending the worlds of fashion, art and design.
