Where Are All the Hardplates?

Craig DeWitt Headshot

Well, that was a busted week. I was supposed to testify in court on Tuesday, but got a call on Friday saying they had settled. That left Monday and Tuesday empty, because Monday I was going to end up re-reading all the documents related to the case and getting ready to testify. Then I had a deposition scheduled for Thursday morning, but that got canceled on Monday. They settled that one, also. Now I had a big hole in Wednesday and Thursday's schedules, as well. Do I get to think that I am good enough that the other side is afraid of my testimony? Or, do they not want to pay my bills? Or am I just a victim of legal games?

Oh well. It gave me time to check the calibration and re-read the owner's manuals for all my toys-I mean tools-polish the pins on my moisture meters, twiddle my thumbs some, straighten up the office, wash the car, and make a few phone calls and e-mails looking for some work. It also gave me some time to work on an upcoming training program. I had one job on Friday where a floor supposedly sloped this summer because of moisture, but it turned out to be a slab that was sloped an inch over 8 feet when the house was built 40 years ago. So I did get one good challenge in this week.

While sitting in my office and looking back through my recent jobs, I saw a pattern. Most of the floors have had dish-out. I didn't report it because it wasn't what I was commissioned to look at, but it sure is obvious to me. Where are all the hardplates? Do people in this part of the world not use them? Why aren't people using them?
