Wood Floor Rescue: This Was a Serious Hot Spot

Sun and the sea usually make a winning combination—but not when the sunshine concentrates through a telescope in the house and torches the wood floor. The original larch floor had been cut from the joists at a 200-year-old French chateau, so the pros at Justwood Flooring in Bognor Regis, U.K., replaced the boards with the closest match they could find, Scandinavian redwood. They selected boards for comparable grain, says Justwood's Alastair Smyth, cutting them down to match the width and thickness, then using horseshoe nails to match the original floor. They used "a mixture of three spirit-based dyes to achieve the 'orangeness' of the original boards," Smyth says. Then one coat of Dinesen Lye and three coats of Dinesen White Floor Soap completed the match. "Our clients were thrilled with the results," Smyth says.
