Although John Feliciano has been a wood floor pro since 1998, “I haven’t gotten tired of doing wood floors—it’s instant gratification. We can pretty much transform a complete house in about week,” he says, and this house is the perfect example. Since moving his business, J & S Wood Floors, from Westchester County, close to New York City, to Binghamton, N.Y., in central New York, he’s enjoyed the area’s “beautiful, beautiful floors that haven’t been refinished in decades.” For the floors in this 110-year-old home, he was careful to keep the customers’ expectations in check, because he could hardly see the floors: Upstairs, they were covered in layers of paint, and downstairs had “a whole lotta wax.” Once the difficult sanding job was complete, though, he told the customers the floors were going to be beautiful, and they were: “They were shocked the way everything came out, because they were prepared to pretty much put area rugs throughout the entire house, and that plan went down the drain.”
