I am going to wrap up our recent look at certification programs with two visuals. These are from recent online reports by both organizations and you can click on the images for the actual reports that these came from.
These two maps show locations where certified forests exist. The different shades of green on the FSC map show volume of forests, while the PEFC map is more simplistic—the green simply shows the present of a recognized national standard. What is interesting to see is that you will have a choice of certified wood from generally either standard in almost every major forest-producing region. It would be great to see more dark green on the FSC map and certainly PEFC needs to make more inroads into Africa and to expand further into South America. But the bottom line is that there is certified material out there—we need more of it, but this is a nice green start:
