NWFA to Hold Open House This Week

The NWFA will hold an open house at its St. Louis headquarters this week on Nov. 9-10 from 2-7 p.m. each day. Many NWFA member companies will have displays, and there will be technical demonstrations throughout the open house, including one from Hardwood Floors' blogger Wayne Lee, who will teach about machine maintenance at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 10. There will also be giveaways and refreshments served throughout the open house, which is free and open to anyone in the industry.

Somerset Hardwoods (Somerset, Ky.) has named distributors Apollo Distributing Company (Fairfield, N.J.) in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York; Bayard Sales Corp. (Philadelphia) in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and parts of Virginia and West Virginia; and NRF Distributors (Augusta, Maine) in Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and parts of New York and Pennsylvania. Mirage/Boa-Franc (Saint-Georges, Quebec) has added Apollo Distributing Company for New York City, northern New Jersey and western Connecticut, and has also added Derr Flooring Co. as a distributor for New York City, northern New Jersey and western Connecticut.

Using a Sound Barrier With Wood Flooring

Building codes typically specify two types of sound-control ratings: IIC (Impact Insulation Class) and STC (Sound Transmission Class). A rating of 50 for each generally is a standard requirement. The IIC relates to sound transmitted as a result of impact on a surface—footsteps on a floor, for example. The STC relates to airborne sounds, such as voices and music. Sound-control underlayments often carry an STC rating, as well as an IIC rating. However, says Ann Wicander of WE Cork, flooring products really have a substantial effect only on impact sounds. “The underlayment really will not affect STC much,” Wicander says. “It really confuses people. The STC or airborne sound is really affected almost solely by the structure itself.”
