Anderson Escapes Severe Fire Damage
An electrical fire occurring late October 11 at Anderson Hardwood Floors’ (Clinton, S.C.) Torrington Road facility consumed about 40 percent of the company’s oldest factory. The fire destroyed a storage area and the plywood-pressing building. All employees escaped from the building and no injuries were reported. According to Vice President of Marketing John Woolsey, a favorable wind direction and good luck kept the fire away from the company’s finishing lines, boilers and network, so flooring could be shipped immediately the next day. “The capacity of the plant we lost is duplicated in other locations, so we just shifted the work there,” Woolsey said. Six hundred employees worked in the affected plant-300 of which were back at work the next day, 200 were expected to resume work Monday, October 16, and the remaining 100 are slated to return to work within the next five to six weeks. “We expect zero effect on our service levels,” Woolsey said.
Penn Wood Fire Damages One Building
Penn Wood Products Company Inc. (East Berlin, Pa.) suffered a fire October 9 at its East Berlin facility. The fire originated in a dust collection system and consumed the front third of a 400-foot-long building built in 1942, damaging some of the company’s older manufacturing equipment. No employees were injured in the fire, and the recently installed finishing lines and the other manufacturing buildings went untouched. President Newell E. Coxon Jr. assures consumers that, although there may be some minor delays as the company assesses the status of materials, Penn Wood continues to operate. “To keep product flowing, we will be running three shifts in the areas not affected by the fire to make up for this temporary loss of manufacturing space,” Coxon said. For more information, call 717/259-9551 or e-mail [email protected].

NWFA Member Services
Once each quarter, the NWFA releases profit improvement reports designed to help its members earn more profit from their businesses. One report focuses on distributor profits, while the other focuses on dealer/contractor profits. The most recent distributor report, "Sales Force Pricing: The Stockholm Syndrome," explores how customer pressures influence distributor sales forces to lower prices, and demonstrates how lowering prices on slow-moving inventory items can affect profits dramatically. In one example, the report shows how a firm with $8 million in sales can experience a loss of $160,000 by reducing slow-moving item prices by just 10 percent and makes recommendations for overcoming this pressure.

The current dealer/contractor report, "Are You Leaving $100,000 on the Table," explores how dealer/contractors can become higher-profit businesses with minimal effort. In the report example provided, two companies with identical net sales are compared, with one firm achieving double the profit of the typical-profit firm. The example shows how to accomplish this by raising prices, lowering merchandise costs and reducing overhead expenses. Increased sales would only add more profit to the bottom line. You can view both reports, as well as other archived reports, online at www.nwfa.org. Simply click on "Services and Supplies," select "Statistical Reports" and click on "Profit Improvement Report." For more information, contact the NWFA by phone at 800/422-4556 (U.S.), 800/848-8824 (Canada) or 636/519-9663 (local and international) or by e-mail at [email protected].
