Armstrong First Quarter Wood Flooring Net Sales Down 20 Percent
Armstrong World Industries Inc. (Lancaster, Pa.) wood flooring net sales in the first quarter of 2008 declined 20 percent compared with the same quarter in 2007, from $199.2 million in 2007 to $160.3 million in 2008. The company attributed the decrease to the slump in residential housing. Reported operating income for wood flooring in the first quarter was $2.5 million compared with $8.4 million in the first quarter of 2007. Adjusted operating income was $2.8 million, down from $8.4 million for the same quarter in 2007. The company reported that operating income declined because lower sales volume and higher promotional expenses more than offset improved manufacturing productivity. Overall, Armstrong World Industries Inc. reported first quarter 2008 net sales of $828.2 million, down 4 percent from $863.4 million in the same period for 2007.
