The white-oak-floored kitchen of Randy Woodson, chancellor of North Carolina State University, won the National Association of Home Builders Best in American Living Award for Room of the Year.
The designers wanted to use Carolina-sourced products for the chancellor's home, which was designed with the university's School of Architecture in mind.
The floors were a collaborative effort, said Randy Beard of Rufty Homes Inc, the project's builder. David Ashcroft, the executive director development and college relations for the college of natural resources at NCSU, arranged for the Carolina-sourced white oak material to be delivered to H & I Wood Products (Princeton, N.C.). There the oak was milled into 1-inch-thick, 4-inch-wide, tongue-and-groove flooring. Down Under Flooring Company (Chapel Hill, N.C.) installed, sanded and finished the floor with DuraSeal Special Walnut and Fabulon satin polyurethane.
