Total housing starts in six of Canada’s largest census metropolitan areas rose by 4% in the first half of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
There were 68,638 new units built across the metro areas in the first half of 2024—the second-highest activity since 1990, according to CMHC.
Calgary, Edmonton and Montréal saw the largest increases in total housing starts “ranging from 40% to 70%.” Meanwhile, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa saw declines “ranging from 10% to 20%.”
