Canada’s housing starts decreased 4% from January to February to a seasonally adjusted rate of 229,030 units, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Single-detached housing starts were down 0.9% from January to February to a seasonally adjusted rate of 56,273 units across Canada.
Housing starts in centers with a population of 10,000 or greater were down 17% year-over-year, with 14,459 units recorded in February, compared to 17,454 in February 2024.
Among Canada’s largest cities, Montreal recorded a 6% year-over-year increase in housing starts in February, Vancouver recorded a 48% decrease, and Toronto's starts decreased 68%.
