Russia has barred a U.S. environmental group from operating in the country, labeling the group, which lobbies against illegal logging, as an “undesirable organization” and a threat to state security, according to a report by Reuters.
Pacific Environment, which is based in San Francisco, campaigns to protect the environment in Siberia and Russia’s far east region from illegal logging, as well as mining and fossil fuel extraction.
In 2015, President Vladimir Putin signed legislation prohibiting “undesirable” organizations from operating within Russia’s borders.
