Strip wood flooring shipments in February were 19 percent higher than the total shipped in February 2001, according to statistics from NOFMA, The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association (Memphis, Tenn.). Shipments for the month totaled 47,148,000 board feet. Combined with January's 20 percent leap over the January 2001 figures, the 2002 total of 93,836,000 board feet represents a 19 percent increase compared with the first two months of 2001.
The National Association of Home Builders' Housing Market Index (HMI) rose two points to 60 in March. "Low interest rates, resilient home values and a stabilizing economy have helped home buyers put whatever fears they might have had following Sept. 11 behind them, which in turn has produced renewed builder optimism," said Gary Garczynski, NAHB president and a builder/developer from Woodbridge, Va.
Overall housing starts rose 2.8 percent in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.77 million units, the Commerce Department recently reported. The gain was due entirely to the single-family sector, where starts rose 7.4 percent to a rate of 1.46 million units-their fastest pace since December of 1978.
