Associations Team Up for Wood Flooring School
NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association, the Maple Flooring Association (MFMA) and NWFA all joined forces to hold a Wood Flooring Basics School March 21-24 at the NWFA training facility in St. Louis. NOFMA Technical Director Mickey Moore, along with Daniel Boone of Everwood Floors Inc., led the instruction of 74 students. They were assisted by NWFA representatives Frank Kroupa and Rusty Swindoll, as well as Glen Miller, David Vinson and John Rider from NOFMA. Shaw Industries (Dalton, Ga.) has purchased a former yarn plant in South Pittsburgh, Tenn., and plans to manufacture its own line of prefinished engineered hardwood flooring. Production will start in June or July and will feature 3/4- and 3/8-inch thicknesses and 3 1/4-inch strip and 5-inch plank flooring styles. Mohawk Industries (Dalton, Ga.) held its first Mohawk Floorz convention February 24-25 in Hendersonville, Tenn. Mannington Mills Inc. (Salem, N.J.) has been awarded the 2006 Internet Advertising Competition (IAC) "Best Manufacturing Rich Media Online Ad" Award for its recent online campaign.

Margaritelli USA Inc. (South Easton, Mass.) hosted a night of entertainment and education for design industry leaders at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City on March 30. Special guests included Italian architect and designer Massimo Iosa Ghini and Italian jazz pianist Danilo Rea.

Floor Supply and Equipment Company (Los Angeles) has opened its 57,000-square-foot facility located at 3645 10th Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90018. The new facility houses the company’s custom parquet shop and custom scraping facility. Horizon Forest Products (Raleigh, N.C.) held an NWFA Distributor Intermediate School March 15-17 in Raleigh. Thirty-two students from 13 floor contracting companies attended the three-day school. J.J. Haines & Company Inc. (Glen Burnie, Md.) has promoted Bruce A. Zwicker to president and CEO. He assumes the CEO position vacated when Robert Thompson retired in January 2006.

Smith Flooring Inc. (Mountain View, Mo.) has restructured its management team to account for the void left by Van Smith when he passed away last year. Jon Smith continues as COO and president; Kent Smith has been named vice president and chairman of the board; and Steve Smith has been named vice president and CEO. The remainder of the management team is intact.

Mohawk Industries has named Bob Leahy senior vice president-hard surfaces for its Residential Strategic Business Unit. He is responsible for the overall business of Mohawk-brand hard surfaces residential products.

Clarke American Sanders (Springdale, Ark.) has hired David Leibach as sander specialist in the Northeast region. Leibach has about 30 years of wood flooring experience and was most recently employed as branch manager at Wood Pro Inc.

Columbia Flooring (Danville, Va.) has added Steven Abels as sales manager-national accounts. Abels comes to Columbia from Milliken and Company, and he is responsible for developing retail-cooperative and national account business. The company has also hired Joanna Beckman as creative services manager and Erica Poteat as marketing services coordinator.

The Hardwood Manufacturers Association (HMA) (Pittsburgh) has elected Charlie Netterville of Fred Netterville Lumber Co. (Woodville, Miss.) president of the HMA. Other HMA officers include First Vice President Jimmy Jones, J.E. Jones Lumber Co. (New Bern, N.C.); Second Vice President Troy Brown, Kretz Lumber Company Inc. In Memoriam
Patti Stasiak, president of All American Wood Register Co. (Wonder Lake, Ill.), passed away from bone cancer on March 24 at the age of 59. Stasiak was active in the wood flooring industry, serving on the NWFA’s membership committee from 1997 to 2004. "Patti gave her all to this industry and we're proud of everything she helped accomplish," said Tom Stasiak, Patti’s husband and vice president of All American. "We’re determined to honor her by continuing to take care of this company into which she poured her heart and soul," adding that All American will remain active, and the normal business routine will soon be back in place.

To help cover the family’s extensive medical fees, a fund has been created at Harris Bank of Wonder Lake. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers and other memorials, donations be made to the fund, which can be sent to: The Stasiak Family Fund, c/o All American Wood Register Co., P.O. By the Numbers
Due to a change in data reporting from some member and nonmember mills, the January 2006 strip shipment number has been revised to 43,918,000 square feet, according to NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association. This is an increase from the originally reported 42,421,000 square feet and an increase of nine percent over the January 2005 figure. February shipments totaled 42,345,000 square feet, a 9 percent increase over the same month last year. This brings the year-to-date total to 84,766,000 square feet, a 7 percent increase from the same time period in 2005. The NOFMA data is from hardwood flooring manufacturers in the U.S., corresponding to actual figures from a majority of the known producing units, plus projections representing units for which actual data is occasionally provided or not provided. The flooring shipments reported include solid prefinished and unfinished oak, beech, birch, maple, hickory/pecan, ash, cherry and walnut.

New home sales declined 10.5 percent in February but remained above the million-unit mark at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.08 million, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
