March a Busy Month for NWFA Schools
NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association, the National Wood Flooring Association and the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association held a Wood Flooring Basics School March 20-23 at the NWFA’s expanded training facility. NOFMA Technical Director Mickey Moore led the instruction of 57 students, along with NWFA Technical Advisor Frank Kroupa and Everwood Flooring Inc.’s Daniel Boone. They were assisted by Rusty Swindoll of the NWFA and David Vinson of NOFMA. Volunteer instructors included Galen Fitzel, 3M; Glen Miller, 3rd Eye Wood Flooring Specialist; Bob Sponamore, All Type Hardwood Flooring; Daniel Racareanu, American Woodcraft Inc.; Rob Johnson, Basic Coatings LLC; Gene Jarka and Matthew Hudson, BonaKemi USA Inc.; Jack Campbell, Campbell & Company Hardwood Floors; Mark Long, Chemque Inc.; Wayne Lee, Clarke American Sanders; William Costello, Dura Seal; Brett Revels and Justin Boone, Everwood Floors Inc.; Cameron DeMar, Glitsa American Inc.; Mike Parks, Horner Flooring Company; Michael Dittmer, Michael Dittmer Wood Floors; John H. The NWFA also held a Certified Professionals Wood Flooring Inspection School March 26-30 at its training facility in St. Louis. Don Conner of Mullican Flooring led the instruction of 40 students, along with NWFA's Steve Seabaugh. Volunteer instructors included Andrew Campbell, DNA Floor Surgeons; Jon Namba, CFI; Cathy Allen, University of Memphis; and Andrew Berg, Berg, Borgmann, Wilson & Wolk LLC.

Additionally, the NWFA held a Subfloor Solutions School March 27-28 in Toronto. Twenty-nine students attended the school, led by Kroupa. Volunteer instructors included Larry Lyons, Amorim Industrial Solutions; Mike Kearns, BonaKemi USA Inc.; Steve Lima, Bostik Inc.; Keith Bechamp, Chemque Inc.; Drew Kern, Flooring Works; Roy Veerkamp, Huron Flooring Ltd.; and Glen Miller, Preverco Inc. Torlys Inc. (Mississauga, Ontario) was the lead distributor.

The NWFA wrapped up instruction in Toronto with an Engineered Installation School March 29. Kroupa led the instruction of 19 students. Volunteer instructors included Larry Lyons, Amorim Industrial Solutions; Steve Lima, Bostik Inc.; Keith Bechamp, Chemque Inc.; Drew Kern, Flooring Works; Roy Veerkamp, Huron Flooring Ltd.; and Glen Miller, Preverco Inc. Torlys Inc. was the lead distributor.

Armstrong World Industries (Lancaster, Pa.) has partnered with the Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF) to promote responsible forest management practices. TFF will manage independent third-party verification that Armstrong’s wood products suppliers obtain lumber legally.

Bostik Inc. (Middleton, Mass.) now is a sponsor for Boston’s Nexus Green Building Resource Center, which houses educational exhibits, year-round tradeshow space and a comprehensive resource and samples library geared toward environmentally friendly practices.

Mullican Flooring (Johnson City, Tenn.) was featured on an episode of TLC’s "Moving Up" March 24, in which the flooring in the remodeled house was replaced with Mullican products. This is the company’s second appearance on the home-improvement show.

Blake-Stevens Wood Flooring Inc. (Pewaukee, Wis.) held its annual open house March 8 at its Pewaukee branch. Aacer Flooring, BonaKemi USA, D & M Flooring, Festool, Grill Works, Homerwood Hardwoods, Norton Abrasives, Oshkosh Designs, Owens Flooring, Powernail Company, Sheoga Hardwood & Paneling, Sika and Spring Creek Flooring were all present, and more than $4,000 in prizes was given away. In other company news, Blake-Stevens is offering Sizzling Wednesdays every week in April, May, June and August. By the Numbers
Total housing starts for February 2007 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,220,000 units, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. This is 10.3 percent above the January 2007 figure of 1,106,000 units.

New residential sales of single-family houses in February 2007 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 848,000 units, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. This is 3.9 percent above the revised January rate of 882,000 units but is 18.3 percent below the February 2006 estimate of 1,038,000.
