By the Numbers June housing starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,066,000 — 9.1 percent above the revised May estimate of 977,000 but 23.9 percent below the revised June 2007 estimate of 1,433,000. Although the overall housing starts showed an increase, single-family housing starts in June declined to the lowest point in 17 years, to 647,000. This is 5.3 percent below the May rate of 683,000.
The overall National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) fell to a new record low of 16 in July. The index gauging current sales conditions declined one point to 16, while the index gauging sales expectations for the next six months fell four points to 23. The index gauging traffic of prospective buyers fell four points to 12.
