The event features single-engine power tools with limited motor modifications and standard power sources; the machines drag race down a wooden track. La Jolla, Calif., resident Steven Roeder took first place in the National Greenscape Challenge held by Cali Bamboo (San Diego) and the Surfrider Foundation. Roeder won an all-expense-paid weekend trip to Los Angeles for replacing the grass in his front lawn with native plants and installing rain barrels to help water his fruit trees.
