James H. Stoehr Jr., chairman emeritus of Robbins Inc., passed away on Feb. 11 at the age of 83.
In 1955, after earning the Air Medal for his service in the Korean War and the rank of first lieutenant, Stoehr joined Cincinnati Floor Company, the family business started by his grandfather in 1894. He became president and ran the company with his cousin Bob Stoehr until 1988. The pair brought experience in contracting and engineering to their largest supplier, Robbins Inc., when they bought the company in 1977. Jim grew the company by developing the Robbins hardwood flooring division, which still produces wood flooring in White Lake, Wis.
Stoehr served as president of both the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association and the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association, and he served on the board of directors of the National Wood Flooring Association.
"Jim loved the wood flooring industry, and he loved all the people of Robbins. He was so proud of the people within the organization and their dedication," said Jay Stoehr, Jim's son and current president and CEO of Robbins, in a letter to associates in the industry. Jay added that his father will be remembered for his quick wit and thoughtful, innovative ideas.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 23rd at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Hospice of Cincinnati, P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, OH 45263; Camping and Education Foundation, 3515 Michigan Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45208; or the Cincinnati Zoo, 3400 Vine St., Cincinnati, OH 45220.
