Home Sales Post Biggest Monthly Gain Since 1993

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that the sales of new single-family houses rose to a seasonally adjusted rate of 437,000 in January. This is 15.6 percent above December, the biggest monthly gain since 1993, and 28.9 percent above the January 2012 estimate.

The average sale price of the new houses in January 2013 was $286,300. The adjusted estimate of the number of new houses for sale at the end of the month was 150,000, representing a supply of 4.1 months at the current sales rate.
