Dwell on Design, America's largest modern design trade show organized by Dwell magazine, will be held June 21-23 on the Los Angeles Convention Center's 200,000-square-foot floor. This year's show will feature 400 exhibitors, 200 speakers, 2,000 products, an expected 30,000 attendees and keynote speaker Michael Graves.
Graves, an AIA Gold medalist and recipient of the American Academy in Rome's highest prize, will take the stage on Friday, June 21, at 5 p.m. and share his insights on sustainability, universal design, and his love affair with Italy.
In 2003 an infection left Graves paralyzed from the waist down, but Graves told Dwell magazine that the disability mostly influenced his common sense design; while rehabilitating in a world-renowned hospital, Graves was shocked to find the bathrooms were not designed to accommodate people in wheelchairs, from the height of the sinks and mirrors to the location of the outlets.
Graves is still designing for his practice and was recently appointed to the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board by President Obama.
