Three countries in Southern African agreed to develop an action plan to protect and add transparency to their timber industries amid concerns of illegal logging, according to Fordaq.
Namibia, Angola and Zambia will create a memorandum of understanding on collective forest management and timber trading, encourage sharing of information and data across borders to ensure compliance, and address the need to tackle overharvesting and illegal timber trading.
The three-country region supports stands of high-value tree species, such as kiaat, teak and rosewood.
The three countries will meet once a year to monitor the implementation of their action plan.
