Distinctive Hardwood Floors (Nashville, Ind.) owner Daniel Antes won first place in the EnRoute Software Design Contest for his 1,220-piece medallion, “Unbroken.”

Unbroken is 1½ inches thick and 72 inches in diameter. It features 10 species of wood: walnut, quartered maple, curly maple, bird’s eye maple roasted European oak, spalted beech, curly quartersawn white oak, wenge, sapele, Peruvian walnut and afrormosia. The medallion was finished with Overmat Hardwax-oil Classic.

“This is me expressing my art,” Antes said. “It’s me doing what I want to do rather than doing what people want me to do.”

The medallion was inspired by a hand-painted mandala, a spiritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, of artist Eileen Bradley. Completing the medallion took more than 200 hours, a significant portion of which was spent painstakingly redrawing Bradley’s mandala using EnRoute’s CAD software.

This is Antes’ second medallion inspired by one of Bradley’s mandalas. The first he did is called “Thrive.” Thrive is also 72 inches wide and features 880 wood pieces, including dye-injected pieces.

Unbroken and Thrive are available for purchase for $17,500 and $14,000, respectively. A 32-inch version of Thrive is also available for $3,500.

EnRoute is a CAD design software and CNC software company, and the contest was open to the company’s software users.
