Customs officials in Laos discovered 849 rosewood logs weighing more than 30 tons hidden underneath boxes of Red Bull drinks on the Laos-Vietnam border, according to Radio Free Asia news.
The find is one of a number of busts that show how difficult stopping illegal logging in Laos is, even with the timber export ban put in place in May 2016, the report said.
Other busts in 2017 included the discovery of 6,350 cubic feet buried of illegal timber buried underground along the Lao border with Vietnam, as well as a convoy of 27 trucks smuggling logs that were associated with the local governor’s wife.
