Overall construction spending in 2018 jumped 4.1 percent to $1.3 trillion compared with 2017 spending.
Residential construction declined 1.4 percent in December 2018, and nonresidential activity remained the same.
Total private construction fell 0.6 percent from November 2018 but grew 0.8 percent year-over-year. Public construction also fell 0.6 percent from November, but it increased 4.2 percent compared with the same period last year.
