Sri Lanka’s New Plan to Curb Deforestation? Outlaw Chainsaw Imports

The Sri Lanka government recently approved a novel plan in its attempt to curb deforestation: ban the importation of chainsaws, ColomboPage reports.

The country has determined that a majority of its deforestation has been the result of illegal logging and that easy-to-use mechanical chainsaws in Sri Lanka are often used for the illegal felling of trees, according to the report.

The chainsaw import ban comes as the country attempts to increase its forest cover from 29.7% to 32% by 2030.
