Flooding from Dam Collapse Causes Massive Buckling in University Gym Floor

Photos courtesy of Dave MarshFlooding from a dam collapse caused massive buckling on a university’s gym floors in Midland, Mich., MLive reported.

The dam collapse was spurred by heavy rainfall and engulfed the athletic buildings of Northwood University May 20, forcing the campus and approximately 10,000 people in the area to evacuate, NBC 25 News reported.

Northwood Director of Athletics Dave Marsh estimated the court’s wood flooring was under about 6 inches of water from the flood.

“Fortunately, we didn’t get 6 feet,” Marsh told MLive. “Still, that was enough to destroy the floor in the arena.”

The warped wood floor has already been removed from the arena, and the university is still assessing the cost of the damages. The university is aiming to have the facility ready to reopen in the fall.
