Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro has pledged to end illegal logging in the Brazilian Amazon by 2030.
The promise came from Bolsonaro in a letter to President Joe Biden, CNN reports. Brazil had already promised to end illegal deforestation by 2030 when it signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015; however, the country’s commitment to the goal has been in question since Bolsonaro assumed office in 2019.
Under Bolsonaro’s administration, deforestation and wildfires have increased in the Brazilian Amazon at dramatic rates.
Bolsonaro will participate in a planned climate summit led by Biden April 22–23.
