Number of Homes Built on Slabs Surges

The majority of new single-family homes started in 2023 were built on slab foundations, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction.

In 2000, 45% of homes in 2000 were built on slabs; that number jumped to 72% in 2023.

Meanwhile, the share of single-family homes built with full or partial basements was 16.6% in 2023, down 3% from 2022. Additionally, 9.9% of new homes were built with crawl spaces in 2023.
