I’m Staying a Small-Town Girl

“How did you get started in the wood flooring industry?” This is a question most of us have been asked at some point. I was in the right place at the right time when I accepted a sales position with Hardwood Floors, now WFB, 15 years ago. I had been working as a sales rep for our parent company and was thrilled to move into the role. Our editor, Kim Wahlgren, seemed to know everyone and everything there was to know about the industry–I was in awe of her knowledge and close, long-standing relationships. She suggested I register for the next NWFA school, which happened to be taught by Daniel Boone in NYC later that month. I was assigned to Howard Brickman’s panel and treated like every other student. I was shocked at each instructor’s genuine care in teaching me the proper sanding techniques and why each step mattered. Naturally, we also had a couple fun nights out, and I ended up missing my flight home. I’ve never shared that part, ha! The school was a great first lesson in what was to come.

Our staff often compare this industry to a small town. Things may feel a bit dysfunctional at times, but the people and connections make it special. How fortunate are we to work in an industry full of genuine, hardworking, talented and generous professionals?

As you may have guessed as you read this, my time at WFB is coming to an end, but it’s not goodbye. I am the biggest believer in WFB, why we do what we do and the value the brand brings to the industry. In my new role, I’ll be supporting one of our advertising partners by leading their marketing efforts—a large part of which will be through WFB. You’ll be in great hands, and I’ll look forward to continuing to be a part of our small town.
