The Australasian Timber Floor Association announced the winners of its 2025 Floor of the Year Awards at its 20th annual presentation and dinner on Oct. 18. The 2025 winners are:

Description: 14-mm thermally enhanced spotted gum. Custom basketweave pattern, designed in-house. Design includes four 520-by-130-mm boards to form the internal square, with two boards at 1300 mm to create the basketweave pattern. All boards were tongue-and-groove and end-matched to reduce movement.

Description: This project involved restoring damaged Jarrah flooring in a historic theatre. While most contractors recommended replacing the entire floor with new Jarrah, we were committed to preserving the character of the original timber. After an extensive search, we sourced 400 square meters (4,305 square feet) of recycled Jarrah chosen specifically to match the existing flooring.
Description: Cut from solid European oak, this bespoke floor reimagines the Versailles pattern with custom 680-mm formations. Framed by double 80-mm oak borders and precision-set solid brass inlays, including curved laminated detailing, the semi-gloss varnished finish delivers a refined expression of artisanal excellence and timeless architectural elegance.
Innovative Design Solid Runner Up: Platinum Flooring Solutions (New South Wales)
Description: Brushbox basketweave parquetry with a combination of brick-bond and soldier border was installed in this heritage home to complement the elegance and age of the home. The set out was incredibly challenging due to the combination of the borders and the transition point between the hexagon shaped sunroom with bay window and the main sitting room.

Description: Foyer and waiting room of an AI and robotics consulting firm was done with strong input from the director/engineer. Herringbone was completely re-manufactured to achieve a perfect size to align in the center area with borders and double-brass inlays.

Prefinished Stair Winner: Know-How Flooring (New South Wales) Product: Engineered oak timber flooring
Description: Large scale project involving installation of 600 square meters (6,458 square feet) of plywood subfloor and engineered oak timber flooring. One spiral staircase, one split-level curved staircase and one standard staircase.
Description: What makes this remarkable is that our young installer and second-year apprentice did all the craftsmanship. Prefinished engineered flooring was kerfed and mitred to form this near impossible double-curved pair of steps, and all work was done on site. Every step was templated for perfection. Thousands of precise cuts were made in perfect depth and frequency and mitred together.
Description: A complete removal and replacement of the external decking.
Deck Runner Up: Get Wood Flooring (New South Wales)

Description: The object of the project was to install new decking and frame over existing terracotta tiles. We wanted a mid-century design with the new deck so we installed thinner 65-mm blackbutt boards with 316 SS screws and plugged all of the screw heads for a cleaner appearance. We applied a tinted oil finish for a weathered appearance.
Sanded & Finished Winner: Mrboards (Victoria)
Finish: Fiddes
Description: 3-mm European oak bevel parquetry floor that we sanded to the required level. Applied a custom stain mix to blend the oak to the rest of the house. Due to the heated slab under the flooring, we applied a hardwax oil to complete the project.
Sanded & Finished Runner Up: JAG Woodworks (New South Wales)

Description: Repaired, sanded and finished solid brush box tongue-and-groove flooring.
Hybrid & Composite Runner Up: Ecodure Flooring (New Zealand)
Description: This project was a full interior renovation of a large 33rd-floor apartment in a grand post-modernist building. This particular hybrid floor was specified by the design team for its proven acoustic advantage and its realistic oiled-oak look and feel.
Avant Garde Winner: Touch of Class Flooring (Western Australia)
Description: Showroom feature wall. Secret door and drawer set.
Avant Garde Runner Up: James Henry Limited (New Zealand)
Description: Barn. Random width wall and ceiling linings profiled as tongue-and-groove with original face remaining undressed and custom-made doors in a replica fisherman's cottage.
