New U.S. Census Bureau research reveals that the concentration of workers 55 or older in some industries—including construction—rose from 2006 to 2022. Firms consisting of at least 25% of older workers increased from 13 million to 35 million across all industries.
Workforces have been aging especially fast in sectors such as Utilities, Manufacturing and Wholesale Trade. Moreover, researchers found that aging workforces are more prevalent in certain states: in 2022, 39% of Maine’s firms consisted of at least a quarter of older workers.
