There were 305,000 construction job openings on the last day of June, a monthly increase of 14,000, and year-over-year increase of 81,000, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.
Taken at face value, the numbers would suggest a thriving industry with growing demand for workers, according to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. "But June's construction spending report indicates that overall residential and nonresidential construction spending continues to decline," Basu said. "Accordingly, one might look for other explanations for rising construction job openings, including demographic considerations."
Hires climbed 41,000 from May to 323,000 but remained 7.7% below June 2025. Industry quits rose from 120,000 to 143,000 month-over-month while dropping 4.0% year-over-year.
