California held the largest share of U.S. remodeling spending in the first quarter of 2026 at 8.0%, or $22.2 billion, followed by Texas (7.3%, or $20.2 billion) and Florida (5.5%, or $15.4 billion), according to the second edition of the National Association of Home Builders' State Projections of Remodeling. Together, the top three states accounted for more than 20% of national remodeling spending, or $57.8 billion.
National remodeling spending registered $274.7 billion at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate, down for the third consecutive quarter. Even so, remodeling has outpaced single-family construction spending for seven straight quarters and represents 37.7% of total private residential fixed investment.
Michigan again posted the largest increase in remodeling spending, up $637.6 million, or 10.1% year-over-year on a four-quarter moving average, followed by Virginia, North Carolina and Alabama. Ten states saw spending decline in the first quarter, up from five the previous quarter, a slowdown NAHB said is reflected in its forecast of flat inflation-adjusted remodeling spending for 2026.
