There were 251,000 construction job openings in August, down from 299,000 in July, but up from 213,000 a year earlier, according to a National Association of Home Builders analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey data. The construction job openings rate fell to 2.9% for the month, but was above last August’s 2.5%.
According to NAHB, openings remained below levels from three years ago because construction activity, particularly housing, has pulled back. Home building employment declined over the past year, while growth in data center construction was up 46% year-over-year. Immigration enforcement cut into worker availability, too, including jobsite no-shows.
The construction hiring rate slipped to 3.7% in August, down from 4.1% a year before. The layoff rate dropped to 1.3%, and the quit rate held steady at 2.2%.
