Walnut flooring is more popular with interior designers than oak, according to Anderson Tuftex’s (Dalton, Ga.) 2027 Floor Forecast report, which drew on findings from a Harris Poll survey of 512 “high-net-worth” homeowners and 251 interior designers. Walnut was the most popular species with designers (59%), then oak (48%), pecan (46%), ash (44%) and maple (41%).

Designers also pointed to solid/uniform finishes (52%) and herringbone (48%) as trending. Homeowners favored wide planks (43%) and warm natural and honey tones (37%). Cool grays were favored by 7% of homeowners, while 14% of designers said cool grays are declining.

Solid hardwood was the hard-surface category designers most often recommend (44%), followed by engineered hardwood (38%), tile and natural stone (34%), and luxury vinyl plank (32%).

Nearly seven in 10 homeowners said they value flooring that lasts 15-plus years, and 56% strongly agreed they would pay a premium for it. Among designers, 45% strongly agreed clients are more willing to invest in premium flooring than three years ago.
