Now this is more like it, 47 and sunshine! Today I have to put the last coat on the 750-foot job, pick up wood for the next water damage job, then run to Mrs. Rhonda's job and get the vents in. (The painters and drywall guys were in the way last week.) It's a full day and that I like-keep them jobs a-coming!
Now this is more like it, 47 and sunshine! Today I have to put the last coat on the 750-foot job, pick up wood for the next water damage job, then run to Mrs. Rhonda's job and get the vents in. (The painters and drywall guys were in the way last week.) It's a full day and that I like-keep them jobs a-coming!
Friday is always a fast-paced day; trying to get paid and make sure that Monday will line up without a ton of pain. It seems like Monday is full of phone calls and texts getting the week going and Friday is the stress day. You've got to get paid from the jobs and then make payroll. We try to pay them around 4 p.m. ... Why? Well, in the minds of some of the guys, a paycheck is the end of the week. A quick run to the bank, then the candy store and then home.
Joey and I worked the full week but had a few of them not come back after dinner (that's what I call lunch); so now we write them as late. But, it's still time to hit the bank and store. Oh, just so you know what we call the candy store, that's the beer run for the weekend. I do not drink; my Friday thing is just relaxing and take a slow drive home on back roads ... look around, talk to folks and make sure when I get home that work is off my mind. That's not always the easy thing to do when you are the cook, bottle washer and have to make sure all the doors are locked.
Right now at this point in my path it would seem that all the years of travel and work has prepared me for most of the work being done now except for one huge factor: the homeowner. Wow, is working with the public a boatload at times. I have come to accept the fact that you cannot make everyone happy, I try to do my best and make sure the guys do the same. I call it "inspecting what I accept". Look at the stuff you know the homeowner will look at and make sure it is right. Doorways, corners, closets and anything that jumps out in your mind will jump out to them as well.
Overall I must say that in running a business my biggest pain is health care-getting the right plan for the best money is hard. I have looked at a bunch and they all are in the category of "No, we do not cover that" or "Only will cover some of that." I have mixed feelings about the fight in D.C. over this matter, so let's see how it all falls, time is the tell-all in every matter.
