One day this summer I had a terrific day because I took my oldest son out with me to work in the field.
It was an easy day because it wasn't like I had to go refinish and coat a whole floor. I simply had to check on a few projects, look at a project for a remodeler, and install a few transition pieces. It was a relaxed day and my employees were humming along on completing their projects. Along the way we had lunch outside at McDonald's. That's not my norm, but they had Pokemon toys that were an essential for a six-year-old having a day out with dad.
A few years ago I never had the time for a laid back day with my children while working. I had to produce work quickly and do estimates when time afforded. During this time my passion for the world of flooring was, at best, average. I encourage all business owners to think outside of the bounds of being a one-man show so that they can experience the luxury of creating time with the best part of your life, your family. Grow your business, hire great employees, and build a team. You'll be glad that you did.
Spending a day connecting with my son and showing him what Daddy does all day was the best gift I could've received. Dustin was thrilled to be with me, his help only cost me about $4 for four hours. That's pretty cheap, but seeing him fully engaged in making a stain sample and feeling like a part of my life was priceless.
