Words of Wisdom

Wayne Lee 24 Copy Headshot

In my last post I said I would share some of the best advice I've ever been given. Here goes:

1) Say "no" to projects that don't fit into your time schedule or will compromise your mental health.

2) Delegate tasks to capable others.

3) Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

4) Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a "concern," find out what you need to do instead of letting anxiety build. If you can't do anything about the situation, that's a "worry," so forget it.

5) KMS - Keep Mouth Shut. This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.

6) Constructive criticism is like gold-you should worry at the lack of it.

7) Laugh. Then laugh some more.

8) Sit on your ego, son.

9) You are not the general manager of the universe. Once you delegate the task to competent people, remind yourself of this.

10) Get the house ready for the wood, and get the wood ready for the house. (My favorite words from my friend Mickey Moore)

Here's one that applies to every floor man out there:

11) Take your work seriously and do it well, but do not take yourself seriously. Have a sense of urgency but realize it's just a job-there is more to life.

And, finally, some wise words from my parents.

Here's one my momma gave me: If you're having problems, talk to God on the spot. Try to nip the small problems in the bud.

And one from my dad, who is like me and worries about everything. He said, "Son, I've been worrying about stuff all my life that I realized I don't need to worry about. If something's coming up tomorrow, worry about it then, not today. Otherwise you'll have to worry about it twice."
