Tales from the Front: This Wood Flooring Job Was Really Black-and-White

Wood flooring contractors have plenty of stories about strange animal encounters, but Chris McElroy of McElroy's Hardwood Floor Co. in Mount Vernon, Ill., might win the prize for the most unusual. About 16 years ago he and a helper were doing a wood floor job in Centralia, Ill., at a property surrounded by pastures with exotic animals. McElroy was working inside the home when his helper said, "Chris, come out here—you've got to see this." McElroy went out to see a baby zebra standing at the end of his trailer peeking inside. "He was watching a goat eat our big machine bag," McElroy says. When McElroy called the homeowner, he laughed and said the baby zebra, which they had rescued from a traveling show, just liked to roam around the property. He had been sick and they were bottle-feeding him and nurturing him back to health (fortunately he wasn't the one eating the big machine bag!).
