Longtime pro Selva Lee Tucker shared this story that happened during a medical event earlier this year:
“On a Friday night, after 12 hours of severe stomach pain, I drove myself to the county emergency room. The doctor on duty said it was gallstones. Several minutes later, a nurse came in and asked if I had ever had morphine, and I said no. She smiled and said there would be no more pain as she put morphine into my IV. She was right—no more pain. In fact, I got happy. They sent someone to wheel me to a CT scan, and I couldn’t see the floor, because I was lying down, but on the way, every few feet, I felt a bump on the front wheels, and then a bump on the back wheels: bump-da-bump, bump-da-bump. I started trying to tell the person pushing my gurney down the hall his big machine was not aligned properly, or he had a bad wheel, and he was going to have a bad sanding job. He asked me what I was rambling on about. I sat up and could see the concrete joints telegraphing through the vinyl floor. All I could think about, even in my morphine haze, was that I have spent too much time in this business!”
