I learned to do wood floors from Chuck Crispin of Legendary Hardwood Floors starting when I was 15 years old, and Chuck would bring in wood floor master Allan Pyne (of Sunshine Flooring Company) when we had a particularly complicated parquet job. In those early days in my career, I would sometimes get frustrated and lose patience about cleaning up after every other trade on the job. On one such occasion, Allan told me, "Remember, young man, shit runs downhill, and you are on the floor!" I now say this to my employees in similar situations, and it always brings a laugh and an awareness that, as wood floor professionals, we just have to be patient.
