Just mention clients choosing stain colors, and you'll get a predictable reaction from wood flooring contractors. Here's a true stain story from a wood flooring job site that's anything but predictable, though. Mike Des Rosiers of Rose Wood Floors on Vancouver Island, B.C., recalls a job that taught him what all our mothers tell us: Don't judge a book by its cover. As he tells it: "A few years back, we were doing a sand and finish in a new custom home. We had not yet met the homeowners, but judging by the home and its detailed workmanship, we assumed we had a tough client on our hands. Later in the afternoon we finally met. After going through all the details, it was time to pick the stain color; we had about 2,000 square feet plus the stairs to stain at this home. When we asked what they had in mind, the man looked to the floor and said, 'How about the color of my shoes.' Then he walked away."
